  2. How to Set Up a Web Hosting Account
  3. How to Point DNS to Host
  4. How to Install a Website Platform for Your Derby Business Website

This is part 1 of the 5 steps. If you wish to register your domain with your hosting package, go to step 2 (you won’t need this step).Table Of Contents

Please note: I only recommend tools that I personally use and have used. Certain links on this page do contain a referral link, also known as an affiliate link. It works like this, I tell you about an amazing product or service, you click on the link and make a purchase, I earn a commission.

It is a way of saying thank you from the company for sending them a new customer, and by using the affiliate links, you are helping me to create even better content that will help you be more successful with your business. You can find a link to the DKP Marketing affiliate disclosure policy in the footer of the site for further information.

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is what your visitors will type into a browser address bar or a search engine to find your website.

The domain points to where your website files live on the server of your hosting account.

It is important to choose a good domain that represents your business.

If you have not started a business yet, then take the time to get creative with your domain name.

Let’s say you are a tour guide in Derby, you could try to register something like This is a good domain because it automatically tells your visitors exactly what your business is about and where you are located.

If you are a removal service, then you could see if for or similar is available.

Alternatively, you can build a brand around a unique brand name in a similar way to Wix and Weebly.

Neither company have a name that tells you what it does, but once you become familiar with the brand, you’ll know that Wix and Weebly both provide website builders for people looking for an easy way to get their business websites online.

What Domain Names Should I Avoid?

You can use numbers in hyphens in your domain but I recommend that you stick with something that is easy to remember, easy to type into a browser address bar or search engine, user-friendly for touch typing on a mobile device, and people using assistive technologies.

Let’s say you have a domain name that is and you tell someone in person what your URL is. You would have to say that your website address for is – “w w w dot my hyphen derby hyphen business dot co dot uk”. A bit of a mouthful, and difficult to remember.

The same problem arises with numbers. Let’s say your business name is a play on your physical address, so the web address you choose is If you were to tell someone your domain URL, would they know to type a number or would they type the word for the number? Typing instead of Avoid!

When searching for a domain, be aware of trademarks and copyright infringement.

Because Derby is in the UK, you can search Companies House for registered companies to ensure you do not register a domain for a company that is already up and running, saves you a headache later down the road. If you are reading this post from outside of the UK, your country will have a similar service that you can access.

What Domain Extension or TLD Should I Register?

I recommend going for a .com or TLD (top-level-domain) where possible. If they are not available, then maybe .net at a push.

There has been a great number of new extensions that have been released on the market recently, but the majority of people will default to .com when typing in your domain. If you are in the UK, then they will be familiar with the extension.

You can see, Namecheap lists 466 TLDs and I’ve used their Beast Mode domain search to highlight the 30 most popular extensions.

How to Search For A Domain Name?

Whatever domain name you decide to go with for your Derby business website, you now have 2 options.

Option 1: Purchase a new domain. If you go with option one, then I highly recommend you follow the steps below to purchase your domain from Namecheap.

Option 2: Purchase an aged domain. Some of the best domain names have already been registered.

By purchasing an aged domain, you are also gaining access to their Trust ScoreAuthority ScorePage Score and Domain Score (metrics used by SEMRush to score a domain on how well it is viewed by the search engines, and whether it has a low quality/high quality backlink profile). This can potentially save you months or years of search engine optimisation and link building efforts.

I will create a future post on finding quality aged domains that have great backlink profiles and high trust scores. Until then, you can get this information yourself by visiting SEMRush and running a domain name through their tools.

As most businesses start out on a tight budget, I will complete the rest of this tutorial by registering a domain with Namecheap.

Register a Namecheap Domain Name

Namecheap is one of the most affordable domain name registrars available, and they provide excellent customer support.

Click here to go to Namecheap

Follow along with the steps below.

search for a domain name

Enter the domain into the search box provided and click on the ‘search domains’ button.

The domain will be shown as either available or unavailable for registration. If you are lucky enough to find a good domain on first search, then add the domain to your shopping cart.

domains list

(1) This is the domain I searched for. (2) Shows alternative domain extensions (.net, .dev, etc.) (3) Shows the prices of each domain registration per year. (4) Click the cart button(s) to add your domain name(s) to your cart.

Alternatively, you can search for a domain using ‘Beast Mode‘ and this will give you more search options and return a larger list of results.

search domains using mode

Type in your domain and click on ‘Best Mode’ instead of the search button.

If you are not happy with the results, edit your search criteria and domain keywords and perform the search again as many times as you need.

add domain to cart

When you have found the domain that you want to purchase using either of the search routes mentioned above, click on ‘Add to cart’ located next to your chosen domain.

NOTE: You can purchase a .com, (.co, .uk, etc.) and redirect it to your domain, and vice versa, if you so wish. This way people visiting your website by typing in the .com extension will still land on your website as it will redirect to the .com to the domain URL.

You will now be presented with some additional options.

domain chekcout options

(1) Shows that you have a domain added to your cart. (2) These are additional purchasing options. You will not need any of these such as the hosting account providers, as I recommend you host with SiteGround (part 2 of this series)

view cart button

Click on the ‘View Cart’ button to start the checkout process.

confirm domain purchase order options

(1) This is your domain that you are registering. (2) This is the term of your registration. Minimum is always 1 year. (3) Set auto-renew to ‘active’ to save losing your domain at the end of your chosen term. (4) WhoisGuard and PremiumDNS features. I do not use these but you can read more about them on the Namecheap website. (5) Click ‘Confirm Order’ to complete your order and go to the payment options.

Now you will either need to login to an existing Namecheap account or register a new account. Follow the steps presented to you and then pay using your preferred payment method.

That’s it, you’ve now registered a domain for you Derby business website.
